There is a hadith stating that the Prophet Muhammad Ṣallallahu alaihi wasallam combined (jama’) prayers without any valid excuse, which contradicts the consensus that it is not permissible to combine prayers without a valid reason. This hadith about combining prayers without a valid excuse is also reported in several different textual forms, leading to various interpretations among scholars. Some of these textual models are indicated to be flawed (ma’lul); interestingly, some of the flawed texts are included by Muslim in his Sahih collection. A literature study method using the approaches of ‘ilal and mukhtalif al-hadis is employed to achieve the objectives of this research, which aims to trace the differences in the texts of the hadith, assess their validity, and explore how these differences affect the understanding of the hadith, along with identifying the appropriate interpretation. Some findings from this research include the identification of three flawed textual models of the hadith, two of which are included in Muslim’s Sahih; the correct interpretation of the hadith is that the term "combining" refers to jam’u ṣūri.
