Abstract

The scholars of ḥadīth differed in their assessment of the narrations of Sa‘īd bin al-Musayyab from ‘Umar bin al-Khaṭṭāb, based on their disagreement regarding the validity of his sama‘ (direct hearing) from him. These reports are dispersed across various ḥadīth compilations, including al-Sunan al-Arba‘ah, but no single work has been dedicated to collecting and analyzing these narrations comprehensively. Hence, the researcher aims to gather and critically examine these reports using the methodology of ḥadīth studies, in order to distinguish between those that are authentic and those that are not. This research is a library-based study employing a qualitative-inductive method, whereby the researcher traces the narrations of Sa‘īd bin al-Musayyab from ‘Umar bin al-Khaṭṭāb found in al-Sunan al-Arba‘ah, and analyzes them according to the standards set by the muḥaddithīn (ḥadīth scholars). The findings of the study indicate that the narrations of Sa‘īd bin al-Musayyab from ‘Umar bin al-Khaṭṭāb fall into two categories: those in which he explicitly states having heard directly (ṣarīḥ al-samā‘), and those in which he does not. The total number of these narrations in al-Sunan al-Arba‘ah, excluding repetitions, amounts to thirteen: five of them have a ṣaḥīḥ chain of transmission up to Ibn al-Musayyab (although his direct hearing from ‘Umar is unproven), two are ḥasan li-ghayrih, and six are ḍa‘īf. In conclusion, there is no authentic narration in which Ibn al-Musayyab explicitly affirms having heard directly from ‘Umar bin al-Khaṭṭāb.
